Cupcake A La Mode = Cupcake Paradise. Walking into Cupcake A La Mode is like walking into a pink, cupcake heaven. I definitely gasped in awe at the sheer cuteness of it all. A break down of what I ordered: French Toast Cupcake: Their best seller and rightfully so. It tasted like a giant piece of perfect french toast. Raspberry Lemonade Cupcake: Tangy and beautiful. Some coffee/chocolate concoction that I forgot the name of: AMAZING. There was even a chocolate covered espresso bean on top! A mint cupcake of some sort: Haven't tried that one yet, but it looks great! Shortbread Latte: Absolutely delicious. Cupcake A La Mode is the first place I've found with shortbread syrup Brown Sugar/ Cinnamon iced tea: surprisingly delicious! Needless to say, after two cups of coffee for breakfast and then immediately driving to Cupcake A La Mode and consuming everything on the above list, my heart is beating at 100 MPH in a state of sugary overdose (but in the best way possible). I spoke with the manager, Becky, and she explained that they come up with 2 new, special, experimental cupcakes every month. Starting tomorrow, September will feature a Root Beer cupcake and a Banana Split Cupcake. The Root beer cupcake will be made with Root Beer Shatto milk! Without a doubt, I will be coming back to Cupcake A La Mode!

These cupcakes are incredible! And, I love for cupcakes, so I've tried them all over the world and these are some of the best. My favorite cupcakes taste like happiness and love had two illegitimate babies, and their names were Sweet Amaretto and PB&J. The seasonal cupcakes also never cease to amaze! I've been in KC a few years and these are still the best cupcakes I've had to date. Bar none. I've bought these cupcakes for my office staff in the past and no they'd take a bullet for me. I'm clearly a fan and take my KC friends here every chance I get.

My friend brought me here for my birthday and she selected a dozen gourmet cupcakes. They were absolutely delicious. Hands-down, the best cupcakes I've ever had. Starting with the Bella Nutella, one by itself is rich and delicious. Simply by looking at the colorfully named cupcakes in the display, you can tell there's food and then there's art and Cupcake A La Mode falls more so into the latter category. For what you are receiving, a delicious cupcake, the price is fair. Keep in mind, they are large cupcakes. Parking isn't the best but we found free parking at the Forever 21 store across the street. One sad note, the cupcake holder is too shallow and the thin mint cupcake tipped completely on its side while in the car. My friend always says I hit the corners too hard when driving and this time, it proved true for the cupcake. Wish they would get better boxes.

Outstanding. PB&J in particular was great.

Very good cupcakes! I would definitely come back. I had a red velvet and a raspberry lemonade (not strongly flavored as such). I like the size of their cupcakes too. Only complaint, because I'm a serious cupcake connoisseur, I dislike when cupcakes sit out and the icing gets crossed crisped over. Other than that, I recommend trying this spot to satisfy your sweet tooth.

The cupcakes here are really pretty (but gigantic), and I was looking forward to coming here during our trip to Kansas City. Unfortunately, since we came only a few hours before closing, they had sold out of a lot of their flavors (and all the ones I really wanted to try!). I ended up settling for the PB&J Cupcake (Vanilla Cupcake Topped w/Raspberry Jam, Swirl of Peanut Butter Buttercream, Drizzle of Raspberry Jam, $3.50, yelp.com/biz_photos/cupc… ), which looked the best out of the remaining ones. However, the cake was dry, the frosting super sweet, and the jam drizzle had the consistency of a gel frosting decorating pen you can get at the supermarket. I wasn't a fan at all, and was disappointed by my pretty cupcake. If back in Kansas City, I would consider coming back to try one of the other flavors I wanted to check out, but wouldn't go out of my way. Parking on this street is also tough since there isn't much street parking available, but I believe you can pay to park in the garage across the street. However, there is one spot where you can park for 20 minutes or less (something like that).

We stopped in to try these cupcakes because they were #77 on the top 101 Best Cupcakes in the US list. We were very disappointed. My boyfriend and I originally planned on each ordering our own cupcakes. Upon seeing how dry all of the cakes looked in the case, we decided against that. We split the chocolate caramel cupcake. My initial visual observation proved correct. It was the most dry chocolate cake I have ever experienced. The only thing that made it somewhat better was the caramel in the middle because the cake touching that was somewhat moist. I didn't finish my half of the cupcake...it wasn't worth the calories. I am a cupcake fanatic, in search for the best, and these were not good at all. I'm unsure how they made the list in the first place.

Oh my yummyness! Good thing I don't love closer.. I'd be there all the time. We've stopped here the last two times we were in KC. Mama Mia is one of my favorites. This time I tried the Salty Caramello with a Mama Mia to go :) It is like heaven in my mouth! Great choice.

Their locations are always, clean, inviting, cute open. Staff is incredibly courteous, helpful and patient as well. The cupcake choices are fun, beautiful to look at, delicious and enticing. I always come in for 2 and seem to leave with 4 to 6. This is my favorite cupcakery to visit when traveling through. I also choose them for gifting to friends and family. Keep up the great work!

This really is the best cupcake shop I've been to. Just the right amount of sweetness, they're always moist, and so pretty! I don't find the shop particularly welcoming to sit and eat but it's great to just pick something up and go. They also have the option of buying "kid's size" if you order a couple days in advance, great for parties! This is a definite must for anyone! Unless you're diabetic.

Stopped in for a break from shopping and were definitely not disappointed! One of us enjoyed the Lemon special of the month and the other of us a French Toast crumble... All we can say is: "Yum." If you get a chance, go and support a local business.

Perfect cupcakes. I like that I can order a dozen same day and pick up. I feel the size and quality is equivalent to the cost - about $25/dozen. Love the flavors. The moisture, texture, and density of the cake itself is my favorite... And their icing is perfection. Highly recommend!!

DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!! It was my first time visiting the store. A hidden gem in downtown. Cute, quaint, fabulous cupcakes. It was my boyfriend birthday and I wanted to buy something different other than a cake. I bought 6 assorted cupcakes and they are delicious and worth the ride. I highly recommend. 10 stars if I could. I shall return.

Groupon! Haha I actually came here a year ago and got the Groupon because they were awesome! Cake is moist. The flavors are on point. The sugars are sweet. So are the ladies working there! I like the Mama Mia and the Marshmallow ones the best. I would say there is no yucky ones. So if you like a certain flavor... Just try it!! I haven't tried their cakes... But that's because I don't like cake. I actually don't even like cupcakes... But theirs are sooo good!

I just had the best cupcake of my life: the Salty Carmello. Moist cake, creamy frosting and the perfect cake to frosting ratio. The best part, in my opinion, was the actual salt grains that decorated the cupcake. Really made an impact with the caramel frosting. They looked great and tasted even better. I'm a HUGE fan of salted caramel and since it is such a trendy flavor at the moment, you see it everywhere, but most places you can't even taste the difference between regular caramel. This really hit the spot for me. I'm only giving 4 stars for now, since I've only tried one, but I will be back!

I am a cupcake addict. 'Nuff said. These cupcakes are massive and decorated beautifully. The raspberry lemonade was amazing. The cake was so dense and rich, I could barely finish it! (That's saying a lot considering my massive sweet tooth.) I highly recommend!

  • Jeffrey R.

First and foremost, I am a cupcake addict. Whenever I see a new cupcake place, I must try it. That said, I vote Cupcake A La Mode as the best cupcakes I've ever experienced, hands down. From the Salty Carmella and French Toast (my favorites) to the ever-changing monthly seasonal cupcakes, you can't go wrong here. I also had a specialty cake made here for my girlfriend's birthday using her favorite cupcake flavor and it was a big hit! Lastly, I frequently ordered their cupcakes for clients and they left a positive impact every time. In short, I highly recommend Cupcake A La Mode to anyone!

I kept seeing the Groupon available, so I decided to buy it and give the cupcakery a try. I bought six cupcakes on the Monday following Valentine's day. The Tiramisu was fabulous; the cake was actually moist and the icing had great flavor! I wish I could say the same about the others. I also bought an assortment of the peanut butter chocolate, chocolate obsession and vanilla with chocolate. The cake was extremely dry on all the cupcakes besides the Tiramisu. Since I've never tried this cupcakery before, I'm not sure if it's because the batch I received was leftovers from the holiday weekend or if this is just the natural state of their cupcakes.

When walking around in the hot Kansas city sun a sweet treat is welcome to one's ears. My sister, my niece, and my friend stopped by this cupcake joint when we were walking around the plaza. It was hot, hot, and hot. We stumbled upon this place via yelp and when we walked in it was a small little place with so much charm. There were several tables to enjoy our sweet treats and the AC was a nice feeling after walking around shopping. We were greeted nicely and contemplated our choices. They were out of red velvet so each of us tried different ones. I had a mocha chocolate one which I adored. I loved the frosting and the cake was moist and tasty. I can't remember what the rest of us had right now, but I do remember all of us enjoyed these cupcakes. The next time I'm in KC I know I'd pick up a half a dozen just to try the different flavors.

Months ago I took my nephew here and got one bite of his cupcake sandwich. I have been obsessing over that one bite ever since and was finally able to pick some up last weekend. They were fine but not nearly what I remember about that one bite I had of my nephews. They only make the cupcake sandwiches on Saturday's and from what they say always run out quickly. I think it's a pretty classic case of wanting what you can't have which I'm typically pretty good at. Their cupcakes seem well made and I applaud local business doing so well. The staff has always been super friendly too which helps when you're paying $4 per cupcake.

I hate to say it, but I wasn't a fan at all of Cupcake A La Mode. My husband and I dropped in on a whim after dining at Houstons. We found the selection to be very limited. Both cupcakes had very nice moist cake, but the frosting was awful! It was dry and powdery and loaded on the top! I ended up scraping the frosting off of mine and found my husband did the same thing. We agreed on the place being very underwhelming. For the Plaza, I'll stick to the far superior Natasha's Mulberry & Mott.

  • Annie C.

I love Cupcake! I found this place wondering the Plaza in KC. It is a rare jewel to find cupcakes that both the frosting and the cake are equally delicious. The frostings were mostly buttercream and the cake was moist and light. I purchased a dozen at random and was not let down. They were amazing although some stood out more than others. Luckily, I don't live in KC or else I could have a problem. The shop is trendy and the servers are great. They sell cute cupcake trinkets and the prices are reasonable. I recommend Bella Nutella, Love Doctor and French Toast... There was this coffee one as well but I forgot the name :(

These cupcakes give off such a "WOW" factor. I bought a dozen today for my meeting at Children's Mercy Hospital. I set them on the table and as people started coming in they were like, "Oh my goshhhh, Whoaaa! Look at these! What are these??" I will DEFINITELY be frequenting this place. FYI..they aren't cheap cupcakes, but they are so worth it. Thanks!!

The cupcake explosion left Southern California with cupcakeries at nearly every plaza. Seems it never caught on in the Kansas City area as there aren't many specialty cupcake shops in the area. There are definitely some, but not many. Cupcake A La Mode is possibly the first one I encountered around the downtown area. It's located in the Country Club Plaza so it is great for a dessert stop if you're shopping. It's probably not the most pleasant location if you just want cupcakes as parking at the Plaza can be a nightmare. Décor is what you would expect from a cupcake shop. The cupcake selection is laid out in their glass case. They also have a few selections of drinks (tea, coffee). I like that they have eat-in tables as those are not available in say a Sprinkles back in LA. In my most recent visit, I tried the chocolate mint cupcake. I have to say that the cake portion of their cupcake is very rich and moist on all of their cupcakes. It's got a good chocolate flavor. I have to try their vanilla flavored cupcakes, but I would bet that the cake is just as good. Their icing is really what draws you in. For the chocolate mint cupcake, they add half of a thin mint on top, which was nice but I very much preferred the icing flavor. I also highly recommend trying their cupcake sandwiches. Think of it as a flattened cupcake. It has a better ratio between icing and cake. Each bite gives you just the right amount of both components. If you ever find yourself craving sweets and are around the Plaza area, I would recommend swinging by Cupcake A La Mode and indulging in good tasting, yet pretty pricey cupcakes!

This place is awesome!! Super yummy cupcakes with an option for drinks, too! (Non-alcoholic, of course)

They need angels flying in the air sprinkling glittery sugar while inhaling laughing gas. It still won't compare to the taste of these cupcakes. Now, I am not a big sweets person. I don't eat candy bars, or M&M's or anything like that. Pastries, cakes, cobblers, brownies, and frozen custards - that is me. These cupcakes have some type of secret drug in them. They should be illegal. They have to be. They might be and maybe we don't know it. This can't be right. For a person who eats sweets every once and awhile. The fact that I went crazy and ordered five cupcakes for myself told me a lot. With flavors like French Toast, Apple Pie(that had apple filling in the middle), Raspberry Lemonade, Vanilla Buttercream, and Red Velvet - I lost it. I ate it. I didn't feel one bit bad about it. I will return to do it again. I shared a little last time. I won't make that mistake again.

You know what? I'm really not that into sweets, including silly nonsense like cupcakes. However, this place forces me to make an exception to that opinion! Several weeks ago I had a red velvet cupcake from this place at a friend's party and it blew me away. Then, a few days ago I suddenly had a craving for another one so I dropped in to pick up another red velvet cupcake as well as a peanut butter cream one. Simply marvelous! That night I remember laying in bed as I was about to fall asleep, thinking fondly about how good the cupcakes were! I don't want to know how many calories are in these things and it doesn't really matter because I won't allow myself to come here very often. However, when I'm in the mood for something amazingly decadent I will make Cupcake a la Mode my first stop!

I have given this place several attempts, all at different phases in their business expansion. but, when i want a cupcake, i want something decadent and something better than i can make out of a box. its not ok, that they taste like something bought at a grocery store, and i dont mean cosentinos. its harsh, but having had many cupcakes across this city, it had to be done. they are cute, and the icing is so so. but the white cake is something similar to an ok mix and the chocolate is, wow, no words. how can you make a chain based off of these recipes? its so confusing. who knows, maybe each of the 5x ive tried, an intern was baking? i realize this is harsh, but having bought more than a few for my boyfriends birthday last week, i just felt so bad knowing that he also loves cupcakes, and i had failed. it was embarrassing. at least he was super sweet about it.

Living in Los Angeles, I basically can just trip and stumble into a slew of cupcake bakeries. They're everywhere. Kansas City? Not so much. So when I was at the Plaza and stopped into Cupcakes A La Mode, I wasn't so sure that KC could have a cupcake that could stand up to the best cupcakeries in SoCal. Turns out, it's a lot better than most of the ones in LA. A lot better. Had two cupcakes, was originally going to have one, but they all looked so good! Started with the Salted Caramel which was moist, very moist and had an incredibly satisfying caramel filling inside. Nice surprise and was glad to see and taste it. Only issue was some of the cake stayed in the lining. The second was one of their specialty cakes, A Peanut Butter cake filled with more Peanut Butter and topped with Cheesecake. OK, definitely not for dieters, but if you're going to splurge, why not do it with something this good? Cupcakes A La Mode was amazing. It was so much better than a lot of LA cupcake shop that are overrated and have a lot of dry, flavorless cakes. Not here! Seriously, if they came to LA, they'd immediately be a player. In KC, they just dominate. So who'd think in a town known for Barbecue, the best thing I would find food-wise.....is a cupcake?

  • Chandra M.

The shop is adorable, and quaint, and the prices are decent for the amount of cupcake that you are getting. My friend and I came in a week ago because our favorite cupcake shop was sold out, and we decided to give it a try. The cupcakes themselves are incredibly sweet and rich. I am a sugar addict and couldn't even finish half of mine. They are also much larger than your average cook at home cupcake so that could have been why. All in all I liked the shop, customer service was okay, not necessarily wowing. I might have to visit again whenever I'm in the area.

Cute store with beautful looking cupcakes! The store smelled wonderful! The Raspberry Lemonade was very sweet that tasted very strongly of vanilla. I didnt get any raspberry flavor but there was a hint of lemon on the top layer. Too sweet to finish. The ChocoLatte was great. Its also was too sweet but was good with a latte. It was fun to try, and they were beautiful to look at, but I guess Im not a cupcake person.

I visited Kansas City in December last year, and my friend and I came across this cupcake shop randomly while we were strolling around The Plaza. The tiny shop was covered in the cutest and girliest (sorry, boys) decor, and the flavors of the cupcakes were so bold and yummy. I picked two flavors: Bella Nutella and Raspberry Lemonade. I'm a huge fan of fruit in my desserts, so the Raspberry Lemonade cupcake, vanilla-based with raspberry and lemon buttercream with a chewy candy on top, was literally, the most wonderful thing, like ever. The Bella Nutella was also delicious - chocolate-based with Nutella and chocolate hazelnut buttercream topped with a Rocher chocolate. The cupcake frostings were not overly sweet, and their unique (and kind of magical) flavors will definitely have me coming back the next time I'm in KC!

  • Erica T.

After visiting I really don't understand the hype about this place. We ordered 6 cupcakes, expecting awesomeness, but got "ok" instead. First, all of the cupcakes have one of two cakes - chocolate or vanilla - as the base. This is fine if the frosting isn't run of the mill buttercream. There are some mix-ins to the icing in some of the cupcakes, like pineapple or cream cheese, but I tasted neither of these flavors in our cupcakes with these frostings. I will agree that the cupcakes were pretty, but the whole package didn't do it for me.

Who wants Cupcakes? I do, I do. Nothing better than a tiny little sweet frosted treat! BJ found this place for me. Isn't he a gem? But get this, he didn't want one. So, we shared one. One? Yes, one. I picked out signature of the month. Hummingbird. Their cupcakes seem a bit larger than most. They are also the most beautiful. The cake of the Hummingbird had a lot of flavor and the frosting was divine. The flavors and the decorations are incredibly inventive. I would love to look at this cupcakes all day long. They are so pretty! Pink is the perfect color for the walls of a cupcake shop. Tiny little tables, interesting items for purchase. Who doesn't want a cupcake necklace or a baby tee? The store is truly awesome!

  • Francesca A.

Dark chocolate orange was perfect from the frosting up. The chocolate cake itself, however, was kind of dry and not particularly unique. The frosting had a wonderful orangey chocolate balance, and I wish the cake could have complemented it better.

What a delightful find on a stroll about town! The selection of cupcakes was quite nice and while the cakes themselves were not overly large, we found them just right for sharing as an after dinner or mid-afternoon treat. Near the end of the evening, many of the more unique and popular offerings were gone, but we did find exactly what we were in the mood for......The GOLD DIGGER! This luscious offering inspired song in both our hearts as we got down with the layers of chocolate buttercreme, caramel and a surprise chocolate lava center! The true show stopper in this classy spot was not the decor or the spectacular confections, but the concurrent purchase of a pink "Baking is sexy" shirt for the wife. For all those haters with low levels of love for this place, try it again and this time with a smile on your face!

We were in search for a cupcake place in KC since my sister and I really love cupcakes and sweets. We stumbled across this place, and with the help of yelp of course, and decided to buy some cupcakes and cool down since we were walking around the Plaza in like 100 degree heat. We walked in, and first, looked around at the other products they sell as they are the first things you see as you walk into the store. Besides cupcakes, they sell shirts, cupcake pendants, bath fizz, aprons, and other items you can buy if you wanted to. My sister and I like to buy t-shirts from bakeries and cupcake shops, but their shirts did not have their name on it or anything related to their shop, so we refrained from buying any. Then, we went up to look at the cupcakes. At 3:00 in the afternoon, many of their cupcakes were sold out, so we only had a few to choose from. Although limited, they still had a good selection of cupcakes. My sister decided on the chocolatte cupcake, I chose the chocolate obsession, my daughter chose the strawberry creme, and our friend Trisha got the pina coloda. At first bite of my cupcake, I found the frosting to be very tasty, very sweet, but very delicious. My second bite into the cake, I found a very moist cake, but to me, the frosting of the chocolate obsession overwhelmed the cake flavor. We then shared each of the cupcakes we bought. I must say, they were all very tasty. The chocolatte, definitely perfect for coffee lovers, the strawberry creme, perfect for when you want a refreshing cupcake, and the pina colada, to me, actually tasted like a pina colada! The prices of the cupcakes are the average prices for cupcake shops and you won't be disappointed with the service! The lady we encountered there was very helpful and friendly! She made us believe she loved working in this little shop and enjoyed selling cupcakes! When in the Plaza again, we will definitely stop in here for a sweet treat!

In the cupcake world, this is almost certainly as good as it gets! My fiancé basically decided these would be our wedding cupcakes, but I had never tried them before. With my family in town, it was a good excuse to stop by, get a half dozen different kinds, and see how everyone liked them. In short, it was a unanimous vote of "amazing". Six different flavors were all rich and delicious, flavorful, and ridiculously moist. I had a marshmallow fondue (chocolate cake), and words can't describe how quickly I scarfed that thing down. Be it strawberry or Oreo or peanut butter, everyone had a flavor that they absolutely loved. This is a truly fantastic little cupcake shop.

  • Britany E.

Very moist cupcakes and the frosting had nice flavoring. Only giving 4 stars though because their cupcakes themselves are only vanilla or chocolate and then they flavor them via the way they frost them. With the exception of their special which I believe was blueberry pancake flavor with bacon or something strange. Kids loved theirs of course.

I love dessert. Sometimes I think I live for dessert. When I am eating a dessert, I can only think of that.....well, except when I am thinking about what dessert I might eat next. That being said, Cupcake A La Mode is delish. I've tried many of their flavors. My favorite is the Gold Digger. Moist chocolate cake, caramel, buttercream icing, and pecans. It's the best they offer.

After living in LA for the past 7 years, I've fallen in love with those West Coast cupcakes. But after trying Cupcake A La Mode, I've found that I can now indulge my cupcake addiction when I'm visiting Kansas City! These cupcakes are every bit as good as Crumbs'. (The French Toast may be even better!) Cupcake A La Mode has a great location in my favorite area of KC - the Country Club Plaza. And the little shop is so cute! Not every flavor I tried completely blows me away, but I could say that about pretty much all cupcake spots. But not every cupcake spot can offer something as delicious as A La Mode's French Toast concoction. Seriously spectacular. And the Raspberry Lemonade is delicious also! I have yet to try all of their variations, but I'm determined to try. I've been so impressed by the French Toast, I'll come back every time I'm in KC for sure.

Best cupcake shop to date! We loved it so much, we returned to pick up a togo box for our road trip home. The cake portion of each cupcake was extremely moist and baked to perfection. The frosting for each was indicative of its clever name. My top favorites are the Love Doctor and Stuffed French Toast. I would HIGHLY recommend stopping by if you're in the mood for something sweet!

Visiting from SoCal stumbled upon this cupcake as we were heading to dinner at Fogo de Chão. Cupcakes were delicious and moist. Not a fan of frosting. Frosting was just right, not to sweet. Recommend the Bella Nutella cupcake and the Tiramisu cupcake. Delish!

This is the cutest cupcake shop I've ever seen! They had a pretty good selection of flavors available, and the cost per cupcake is extremely reasonable, considering their all a pretty good size. I came in on Cinco de Mayo, so they had a specialty flavor "Margarita" cupcake--this was DELICIOUS! My friends that came in with me got 1 "Chocolate Obsession" and 1 "Chocolate Peanut Butter" flavor. As I mentioned before, the pricing is very reasonable: $3 each (after taxes). Should you decide to dine in (as we did), there are a couple tables available, as well as a window bench with 3 comfy stools. They offer plastic utensils, napkins, and small cups with a pitcher of water to wet your whistle as you eat. The staff is warm and friendly, and aim to please. From the moment I walked in, to the moment I walked out, I had a pleasant experience. I'd definitely come here again the next time I'm in town. Note: They offer catering services, as well as custom-cake ordering.

I have been coming to this place for a few years now and I love it ... SO much. :::tear wells up in eye::: I'm super passionate about cupcakes, (I've even got a blog called the-curious-cupcake.com ) and as a wedding photographer I have been to and tried many, many cupcakes from many, many different places and Cupcake a La Mode is still my favorite! The cupcakes are big, moist, just the right density and SUPER delicious. Please try the french toast cupcake. It will change your world.

I was in Kansas city for a week and stumbled upon Cupcake Ala Mode while walking around Country Club Plaza. I'm no happy we decided to go in because the cupcakes were phenomenal. I got the Gold Digger which is "A Chocolate cupcake filled with gooey caramel and topped with our rich chocolate buttercream, rolled in crushed pecan pieces and drizzled with more caramel." The cake was super fluffy and moist. Whip cream was airy and the nuts and caramel gave it a nice textural element. I also had the Mama Mia, "a Vanilla cupcake topped with alternating layers of mocha buttercream and cream cheese icing, sprinkled with cocoa powder.". It was a yummy cupcake. The cupcake was very moist and, as promised, it is very similar to eating tiramisu. This one was a little too sweet for my taste but I imagine if you had a nice big up of milk it would be perfect.

Some of the best cupcakes in town. I tried one of the chocolate cupcakes today and was absolutely blown away. May even top icing on the cupcake. The cashier, who I presume to be the owner of the store was very nice and friendly offering free water. She's very friendly when we first walked through the door. Would recommend to many friends.

BEST cupcakes I've ever had. I've tried Sprinkles, Magnolia, and Crumbs and these cupcakes are by far WAY better! The cake itself is super moist and just the right density. The frosting is perfect. Not too sweet and tons of flavor. The French Toast cupcake was the best!!!!!! Must try! Peanut butter was good and the marshmallow fondue was good too.

As an avid cupcake baker and eater, I can appreciate a tasty beautiful cupcake, regardless if it's made my a professional or preschooler. The cupcakes at Cupcake A La Mode are fantastic and the lady behind the Cupcakeista was helpful and patient while I took forever trying to decide. I bought four (three were for friends) and everyone loved them. In addition to cupcakes, they sell cupcake themed items, that would make good gifts.

I'm giving it 5 stars this visit. It's fun, it's pink and black, and the cupcakes are yummy...Why she didn't pack the 3 cupcakes in a box with a holder is beyond me...it's not her fault that I dropped the box walking from my car to my front door. (5 second rule, and I'm certainly glad no one saw that.) I bought a cupcake for someone's birthday present yesterday. I had my son with me, and we both had a cupcake sandwich. While very sweet, I'm an icing person, so it was quite yummy. It consists of creamy icing in the middle of 2 cupcake cookies. Yummy. I love this little shop. We topped it off with a trip to Glace. Fantastic!

After being rolled out of Fogo de Chao, we decided to walk around and this is the first thing I saw. I was a little disappointed that there weren't many flavors to choose from, but I settled on the French vanilla. Being that I couldn't even breath I saved the cupcake for the next day. So after dinner the next evening I cut it open, and ooooooh my. It was still moist, and was very flavorful. I can't wait to go back and try a few different flavors.

Ive had a lot of cupcakes in my life (obviously) and this was hands down the best one I've ever had. My wife fell in love with the decor immediately because she was wearing the same colors, but we were both surprised by the cost. It was much less expensive than we thought it would be, and tasted better than we could imagine. The girl at the front desk was extremely helpful (and patient) as we asked her about every different flavor of cupcake. We will definitely be making trips back here every time we visit the plaza.

Love this place! I ordered a dozen cupcakes for a friend's bachelorette party. The decorator had a lot of fun adding lingerie designs. They turned out absolutely precious, much better than I could have made at home. The toughest part is picking a flavor. Loved the Amaretto Sweet and After Dinner Mint. But must go back for the Nutella Chocolate one.

We stopped by after reading a lot of reviews on Yelp. The two people working were very friendly and walked us through each of the cupcake flavors they had that day and also suggested their favorites. We ended up selecting four cupcakes. All were good but the amount of icing can be a little much. Some people just love a lot of icing, I tend to scrape 80% of it off and eat it that way.

I've been to my fair share of cupcake places, and so far I think CALM (ha!) takes first place. Reasons: 1. Large variety of flavors, including seasonals 2. Cake is excellent - vanilla is soft, chocolate is how chocolate cake should be 3. Frosting is delicious - you get a lot, and that's just fine 4. Cupcakes look gorgeous, and take-out boxes do great job preserving their beauty 5. They are some of the more reasonably-priced fancy cupcakes I have had - they are pricey, but at least they are pretty huge. I had the pleasure of trying the French Vanilla OOH LahLah (like a perfect sugar cookie in cupcake form, even the malt ball on top was tasty), Goldigger (the caramel and pecans makes this luxurious), Bailey's (seasonal, simple but frosting was delicious), and mimosa (lovely orange frosting). They have seating inside this bright pink site should you want to devour there.

Best chocolate cupcake I've ever had. It was so moist and delicious. My family travels all over to taste cupcakes and we try and find at least one in every city we go. Molly's cupcakes is our favorite amongst all of them but I think I just finally found their match. This place deserves a shot on cupcake wars.

I'm a cupcake fiend. I was hoping this place would live up to the hype given it's right in my neighborhood. I tried the marshmallow fondue, and while it fulfilled (maybe overfilled) my sugar craving, it didn't fulfill my cupcake craving. The only creative part of the cupcakes were the toppings/frosting. Cupcake a la Mode really only has two types of cake - vanilla and chocolate. Given that, there really should be no room for error in execution. Unfortunately, I found the cake a bit dry for my taste.

I have been to Cupcake A La Mode numerous times as I used to work in the Plaza area, but this is my first visit to the Plaza location since they moved. I liked the old location, but I can see, traffic-wise, why they would want this spot with more visibility. And apparently the strategy works because the place was packed on Saturday, 1-28-12. My two observations on the new location are: size (much smaller and more cramped), parking (the old space had it's own lot). Other than that it retains the same C-A-L-M charm as the old Plaza location. There was quite a line formed when I arrived, but the three ladies working the counter ensured that customers were helped quickly and the line moved along efficiently. When it was my turn to order I decided to try one of the monthly selections - Orange Mimosa. It was, as their cupcakes always are, a delicious treat. My favorite is (drumroll) Raspberry Lemonade. Husband likes PB&J. I would highly recommend C-A-L-M for a delicious treat, for parties or special occasions.

I have had many cupcakes in the area and most of the weddings across the country I've been to in the last year have had cupcakes instead of traditional wedding cake, however, these are my favorite! Each cupcake is so unique it will take you forever to decide on just a few! The presentation of the shop is adorable, and although getting in and out of the parking spaces can be tricky at times (and my one attempt to go on a Monday proved sadly disappointing) it's worth the effort! We brought home 3 cupcakes to my extended family (they went so fast I can't remember which ones we got!) and we all tried bites of each. The cupcakes were not dry like many I've had before and the icing is not too thick, but just creamy enough. Perfect! There wasn't one that everyone didn't love. If you're looking for a great cupcake place in town I would highly recommend A La Mode!

We happened to see the shop while walking to our car. I had to go in, it's cupcakes! I am totally into this cupcake fad, and have been recently disappointed by said cupcakes at other places. The store is super cute, and very well decorated. I could tell someone put a lot of work and money into making it a nice place with high end furnishings. The cupcakes were some of the best I've had! I opted for the Tiramisu and my fiance grabbed the choco-vanilla. The cakes were moist and perfect, and I'm sure my tiramisu had espresso baked into the cake. The icing wasn't too sweet, def adult icing! I was wary when we walked into a cupcake joint on the plaza, fearing that I would dish out $5-6 a cupcake, but I was wrong. They were $3.25 a piece. I will come back and try the PB&J and the strawberry cheesecake cupcakes very soon.

I was at the Plaza for meetings in November so stopped by and bought a variety for my family. They are so moist and flavorful! I enjoyed the French Toast flavor. YUM!! My daughter liked the Red Velvet. We will stop again next time we are on the Plaza.

The cupcakes are average at best, especially for their price. The cake is dry if you don't buy them early in the day and the frosting flavors can be a little overwhelming. One of the major draw backs to this place is the smell of ammonia cleaner as you come closer to the counter. However, the cupcake sandwiches are pretty good.

This place is SOOO good! The red velvet cupcake is so yummy & fluffy! The decor of this place is also really cool. It looks like some one really thought out how they wanted the store to look. It's so chic!! A must stop for a sweet treat

I was really looking forward to trying out Cupcake A La Mode, so excited that I insisted that we leave early from the Royals game to catch some Bella Nutella and Red Velvet before they closed. Luckily, we made it and found parking with an hour to spare, however, they were out of most flavors when we got there! Totally unacceptable! You have to have your number one flavors available at all times!! After I reluctantly accepted that red velvet and Bella Nutella were nowhere to be found, I settled for the stuffed French toast. We also tried the chocolate and the peanut butter. I thought the French toast was the best of the threes but thats still not saying much as I had my heart set on the Red Velvet and Bella Nutella. Well, the very next day after this disappointing experience, my brother-in-law went by Cupcake A La Mode about 1.5 hours after they opened to get the red velvet and bella nutella for me (since I was so sad from the day before). Again, they were out of the bella nutella! What the heck?! Isn't this one of their most popular flavors?! Whoever is in charge of inventory control needs to get a new job because they are failing miserably! I did however have the opportunity to try the red velvet and it was simply average. I think it could have used a little bit more frosting as the cake to frosting ratio was a little off. Tips: *Call ahead and place your order!! Bottom line, I'd be willing to give cupcake a la mode another shot the next time I'm in Kansas as I'm dying to try the Bella Nutella but will definitely call ahead until they figure out their inventory issues.

I LOVE the PB&J cupcake here. LOVE. I've tired a bite of a few of the others and none compare to the PB&J, but it seems like there is something for everyone here. I recommend checking it out.

My 5 year old daughter and I have done extensive research and taste testings of several cupcake-erys all over KC. This place is hands down the best. It also may be the most pricey too... but these cupcakes really are the total package. Presentation, creativity and, of course, flavor. Faves are the Bella Nutella, Stuffed french toast, and the PB&J. My least favorite one was a monthly special "The Mudslide". I shouldve known better. I mean I wouldnt be caught dead DRINKING one (in public, at least) so I'm not sure why I thought ordering one in cupcake form was going to be any different. I guess being a grown man with a 5 year old daughter in tow at a Cupcake Boutique just wasnt "fancy" enough for me. Ha Anyhow, it was made w/ real Kaluha and i dont know what went wrong because the cupcake was kind of "leaking". It was as awkward as it sounds. Tasted ok... but it was pretty messy. Got to give it to them for trying though. They usually do 2 or 3 new flavors to feature each month. Anyhow, its good. Go.

Ok. I just don't get why people are so whoopity-doo over this place. Sure, they have lots of "pretty" cupcakes with out-of-the-ordinary flavors, but when the cake tastes like air and sawdust with an exorbitant amount of icing to cover it up....in my opinion, it's just ewwww....sickening sweet. I had the PB & J. Honestly, I couldn't tell what I was eating. I had to double check the sign. I had to scrape half the icing off as well. Don't get me wrong....they weren't horrendous, but the cake was just too light and had too much icing. I think the bulk of the richness and flavor should be in the cake and the icing a compliment. These are just the opposite. Light, almost flavorless cake, with overbearing icing that masks what little flavor the cupcake doesn't have. And paying 3 bucks on top of it ? Really ? 3 bucks? For 3 bucks it had best be perfection, and what I had simply wasn't. I'll stick to making my own. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Tried lots of cupcakes in the area and nothing compares to the moist delightfulness that happens at this bakery. One of my biggest complaints about other area cupcakes are that they are dry and do not have enough icing-neither of which is a problem at this bakery. Cupcakes are $3 each, but are works of art. Beautiful to look at and creative to boot. I purchased 3-vanilla w/vanilla icing, smore (best seller) and lemon raspberry. My favorite was the vanilla with vanilla icing. I got the cupcakes to go, but there is a charming little seating area where you can order off the cupcake menu which is broken down into 2 categories-vanilla & chocolate. You can easily miss it, since their only sign is a small window banner. Parking on 47th is a bitch, so you will have to fight for the 2 spots right in front of the store. Yum.

I am a total fan of the whole cupcake fad because cake is my favorite type of dessert. I have gone to every gourmet cupcake place that I have heard about in the KC area, and this is the one I keep coming back to. The cake is moist and flavorful, and the frostings are just right for me - not too sweet, nice texture, and just the right amount. Based on some of the other reviews, I guess these aren't everyone's faves, but I LOVE this place. My favorites are the choco-latte and the red velvet. When I go to a dinner party where I'm in charge of dessert, I'll take an assortment of cupcakes from this shop. We'll divvy them up so everyone gets a chance to try several flavors. Even though all the varieties are delicious, the red velvet is often the favorite of the majority. I haven't tried the PB&J yet because it sounds unappealing to me, but with all the reviewers commenting on it here on Yelp, that'll be the next one I try. If I had a negative comment, it would be that there are only two base cakes - vanilla and chocolate. I love both, so that's not really a problem, but I wish they had carrot cake. Their cream cheese frosting is yummy, and carrot cake would complement it oh, so well.

$18 for three cupcakes and two coffees. Steep. Food was great but only on special occasions. And why a la mode? There wasn't any ice cream.

Fabulous cupcakes! Here's why: Presentation- It means everything especially when you are paying $3.00 a cupcake! The store has nice decor and the cupcakes are always decorated nicely. (I have noticed that other cupcake places will have sloppy decorating ex: frosting running over, crooked cupcake, etc.) You can make a sloppy cupcake at home with a box of Betty Croker for $1.00. Frosting- Their use of frosting is awesome! I am a biggggg frosting chick. I cannot stand when cupcake places do not use enough frosting. Not the case with Cupcake A La Mode! It is the perfect example of what cake and frosting should be. Actual Cupcake Itself- The cake is so tasty that it ALMOST doesn't matter if you had the frosting or not. Notice I said ALMOST. Meaning that the cupcake is very good, moist and not dry as seen with other places. Boxes- They actually give you a box for a single cupcake.......whoa what a concept?! I do not get how some of these places think that one can get a cupcake to go and carry it in a sack......sure if I want a smashed cupcake..but guess what? I don't and I am sure that many others do not either. I guess they expect for you to buy more to get a box which isn't exactly courteous. Price- Yes 3.00 per cupcake is up there do not get me wrong. It took a couple of times going there to get over the fact that I was paying 3.00 for one single cupcake but consider this...........most cupcake places can charge up to $4 and sometimes even $5 per cupcake. Some places charge you $3 or more for cupcakes that are as big as your thumb or ones that are barely frosted. (Did I mention how annoyed I am at under frosted cupcakes?) and it does include a box which only makes since if you are getting them to-go. We can't forget service.............and it is wonderful. The owner is very active in the business which I think plays a huge role in how great their customer service is. She is very engaging and is very interested in her customers and their feedback on her cupcakes. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I Highly Recommend Bella Nutella! It's my favorite one and am often teased about how I always order it time and time again. My second favorite is Dr. Love. Other popular ones are Stuffed French Toast, Gold Digger, Hawaiian Honeymoon and French Vanilla OOh LahLah

I may be about to start a cupcake war, but after extensive tasting at several cupcake shops throughout Kansas City, Cupcake a la Mode gets my definitive vote for best cupcakes in the metro. Not only are the cupcakes a little larger than normal (which equals more deliciousness), they come in a variety of expected and not-so-expected flavor combinations. I find the vanilla cupcake varieties to be a bit superior to the chocolate cupcakes, which have a tendency to be slightly dry. No matter what you crave, Cupcake a la Mode probably has it. My new favorite is the Hawaiian Honeymoon, a vanilla cupcake topped with a decadent layer of pineapple buttercream, crushed macadamia nuts and drizzled white chocolate. Oh. My. God. I brought an out-of-town friend with me when I tried this cupcake for the first time, and she's already messaged me wishing that I could ship her a box of cupcakes. Plus, the shop is too, too cute. Hot pink and black provide the dominant color scheme, making it a whimsical retreat that's also perfect for kids' birthday parties. And now that I've written this, I'm officially craving a cupcake. Gotta go get my fix!

The entrance into cupcake nirvana, aka "Cupcake a la mode" is hot pink ( think adorable little girl) with black accents ( think black lace negligee). The combination sums up this phenomenal little girl dessert in a sexy grown up girl package. Viola' "Cupcake ala mode". The large glass display is filled with ravishing choices. A sign on the wall describes each cupcake to aid in choosing the cupcake of your sugar plum fairytale dreams. Here's the deal with cupcakes, they are individual teleportation units to your childhood. A sweet treat designed for total self gratification, all yours, no sharing necessary. This is perfect for the "only child ,who does not like to share" or the kid from a big family who needed to fight for every morsel. This is your morsel. Cupcakes are a study in ingenuity. 1)How to eat it and get frosting in every bite. 2) how not to get frosting on your nose . Maybe that is what makes eating/devouring a cupcake so fulfilling. The cupcakes we choose to devour were : Stuffed French toast, Vanilla strawberries and champagne,Hawaiian honeymoon, and Bella Nutella. 10 minutes to choose and 3 minutes too stuff our belly's and wipe away the creamy residue. 3 minutes well spent! By the way, I say tear off the bottom of the cupcake, place that on the top, and eat it like a cupcake sand which. This eliminates the embarrassment of the frosting on your nose, and gets frosting in every bite. 'Nuf said.

If any of you have read my review about a certain '3 Females and Their Cooking Device' bakery, you know that I am frank about the quality of a cupcakery. After all, cupcakes are something you can easily make at home and frost to your liking. Therefore, if you're going to pay for a cupcake...you're really paying for an experience. And if you choose to spend your money at Cupcake A La Mode, then you've made a fabulous decision! Clearly, the place is decorated to the liking of the estrogen-endowed; however, if the boys can get past the pink frills they're in for a real delight of the senses. The cupcakes are about $3 with tax and fully worth it. The quality of the cake is taken just as seriously as the quality of the frosting, which makes for truly delicious cupcakes. If I cared less about my waistline and well-functioning insulin, I would have tried all of these cupcakes by now. Go forth, and enjoy delicious cupcakes! p.s. if you plan on going to the west plaza location, make sure you get there at least 2 hours before closing. We went 1 hour before closing time, and they were already completely sold out!

I'm not normally one for sweets in the middle of the day, but with my midday coffee, when we passed Cupcakes a la Mode on the way home, it was inevitable. I've been here several times before. It's a good thing they're not open in the evening or else I'd come after dinner chronically (located within walking distance of my house). The available selections are a combination of whimsical, unique and classic with selections such as the "Marshmallow Fondue", "PB&J" and "Raspberry Lemonade". Today we brought home two: the "Love Doctor", a chocolate cupcake with chocolate chunk strawberry buttercream and a chocolate-dipped strawberry on top, plus the "Stuffed French Toast" which is a vanilla cupcake topped with scrumptious maple cinnamon buttercream icing and with a decadent cream cheese icing. If you don't have coffee on hand already, as I did, you can get a splendid coffee drink there, among other choices like Izze sodas. As sweet as they are, though, I recommend coffee or milk to wash it down. Haute cupcakes and cupcake boutique shops have become a trendy thing as of late. I've not had many, as I like the savory things more than the sweet (e.g. charcuterie over cupcakes), but when comparing to Baby Cakes, located in the river market next to Harry's Country Club, I give the edge to Cupcakes a la Mode for the unique options on their menu that are truly delicious and for the unworldly texture of the cake in their cupcakes. Dense yet somehow fluffy, moist yet light, there's something special going on there that should be noticed. They really are a treat.

Delicious cupcakes. Definitely a treat for a special (or any) occasion. I would give 5 stars if they were better priced----delicious Magnolia Cupcakes in NYC were only $2.50. But this is one of the best in the area, though I'm also a Babycakes fan. I'll probably head there this weekend.

I was visiting KS to see my sister, and we stopped by this little cupcake shop. Honestly, there is a cupcake for EVERYONE. In fact, it's hard just to choose one. They are bigger than a typical cupcake, super moist, and so delicious! Best cupcakes I have ever gotten. If you are in KS, go here.

Picked up a dozen cupcakes to share with colleagues and watching their faces as they took their first bite was priceless. They were all hesitant - they look absolutely sinful - but once they started it was non stop talk about Cupcake A La Mode! I have tried many a cupcake and the problem with most is the cake - usually rather dry and not very flavorful. Cupcake A La Mode cupcakes are moist, full of flavor and topped with the most amazing flavors of icing and toppings. The stuffed french toast was to die for. If only I lived in Kansas City...

This is my favorite cupcake shop! I really enjoy their "flavors of the month" cupcakes the most! It is a dainty little shop, painted pink and black, with a very girly but elegant decor. The ladies are always so friendly and each time I go in to indulge, I ask what flavors will be available for the upcoming month. They give me the description of the flavors to come and I feel like they are sharing a secret with just me. Now that I think about it, I wonder if they make all their customers feel like they're old friends sharing sweet, decadent secrets. Some of my favorites have included Cherry Mash (chocolate cake with cherry icing and diced cherries on top), Mimosa (OJ & Champagne), and white cupcake they always carry that's flavored like almonds! Yummy!!! I love this place and recommend it all the time!

By far the best cupcakes I have ever had in my life. Although they are expensive they are worth every penny, and my parents and friends who I bought them for agreed . They have a vast array of flavors, which at times can make it hard to narrow it down to the one that you decide to buy but I have yet to encounter a bad flavor.

Every cupcake I've had from Cupcake a la Mode has elicited the kind of "ooh"'s and "mmm"'s that ordinarily I reserve for private time if you know what I mean wink wink nudge nudge. Noisy eaters tend to make me cringe but it's pretty tough to stay silent when what you're savoring is as good as these cupcakes are. My favorite is the red velvet bundt cake but even the more adventurous items like the PB & J are fantastic. The staff can be slightly prickly but I suspect it comes from the pride they take in their product. If there's an occasion you'd like to impress or please just show up with one of the Cupcake a la Mode pink boxes and prepare to receive a gracious, "thank you!" **I won't remove a star because the cupcakes are just simply too good for that but I do wish the staff would work on their phone demeanor. I'm always treated well in the store but more than once calling for a special order results in me thinking I may have accidentally run over the person who answered the phone's dog. Just a vibe thing.**

FANTASTIC!!! If I could eat here everyday I would. They have amazing cupcakes and decent prices for designer cupcakes. I haven't found one cupcake I don't like. If I were you I would buy one of every kind and take them home for the next week. Just fabulous.

The Amaretto Sweet cupcake from C+C Mode Factory is like a pair of fake boobs. Got your attention? Allow me to elaborate... I've tried the French Vanilla cupcake (Ooh la la delish) at their Leawood location as a starting point to my Tour de C+C Mode, so I decided to graduate to the Amaretto Sweet cupcake at the West Plaza location. As mentioned in a review for the C+C Mode: Leawood, I tend to be simplistic in my cupcake preferences. All I need is good cupcake with good frosting, gimmicks not necessary. Their French Vanilla cupcake made me a believer, so on to try the others I go. I stopped into the store after work @ 5:00p, so I expected the display case to look rather sparse. I didn't take inventory, but I would guess that there was at least one of each flavor available. All hope was not lost, but i suspect you may not be so lucky on other nights. The shop itself was feeling a bit warm. As some of you may have noticed, it was a hot day yesterday (heat index 100+ !) which, I believe, caused the 4th string cupcakes to look not-so-varsity. Eh, I'm not discouraged by appearances, it's what's inside that counts. I suppose with an older building, mechanical systems may not be able to run at full blast. I was planning on sitting back and reading a couple chapters in my book, but it was just too balmy and I yearned for my air-conditioned car. Oh, right...boobs. Well, the Amaretto Sweet cupcake is flashier than the tastefully simple Vanilla cupcake, boasting amaretto-laced frosting, almond slivers, with an out-of-the-jar marachino cherry on top. The base of the Amaretto Sweet cupcake is the same as the Vanilla cupcake. Though there are hints of the tasty Vanilla within the Amaretto Sweet cupcake, the similarities stop there. Take a bite with the frosting and you're slapped with artificial tasting sah-weetness. What I appreciate about the French Vanilla cupcake is that it's presentation is unassuming. When you eat it, each bite gets better than the next. With the Amaretto Sah-weet cupcake it's appearance is sexy, but that first bite is the best bite and it becomes over-indulgent after that. Ooh, Amaretto, could you cover yourself up with some milk, please? I don't presume that this is typical of all the other cupcake flavors but I wouldn't be surprised if it was either. I'll continue to venture through the Tour; it's going to be such a struggle :).

I am not a fan of this place. I think it is overpriced. The cupcakes are pretty, and the toppings are good, a little too sugary for me. However, I do not think they are worth the money. I guess I will just keep looking.

Definite 5 star experience all the people here are super sweet and they had better be; I'm sure they wouldn't want to be shown up by the cupcakes. :) The Amaretto Sweet is my absolute favorite and although their hours are kinda wonkie if you catch them at the end of the day they are very likely to frost a nice fresh cupcake for you on the spot. I say give it a shot! Enjoy!!

Soooo so cute, both the original 47th St and the new Plaza location (the Lenexa one is cute, too, but I am rarely out that way). I love the cupcake/monster-themed onesies and baby tees they sell, and the darling party hats and cake servers and baby shower games books and handmade aprons - a charming miscellany. This summer they are upping the ante by offering alcoholic beverage-flavored cupake specials. The red wine cupcake was INSANE. I need to go try the mojito and the margarita! Of course, there is always Stuffed French Toast or the Amaretto to fall back on, if you haven't tested your glucose tolerance in a while. I would love them even more if they would offer smaller cupcakes (what if I want two flavors?) and branch out into different base cake flavors (though I realize that's kind of their schtick, to just play with the frosting).

I am not a cupcake expert, this is more about customer service. Went in and ordered 3 different cupcakes, I put a dollar in the tip jar and waited to pay, gave the girl the money and waited for the change, lol didn't get any back, she put it in the jar without asking, these are things that make me not come back. How much are you suppose to tip someone that reaches in a case and pulls out a cupcake to give to you?

Damn Good! I wanted the chocolate/coconut special of the day, but they were out, so I settled for Marshmallow Fondue, woohoo! And also a cappuccino. The gf got Raspberry Lemonade; the sugary raspberry and lemon wedge was what swayed her. Of course, it took us both at least 5 minutes to decide. Lucky for us we were the only there when we first walked in. I think there was one table outside, two tables inside, and a little bar with several stools to sit at. The place looks like Hello Kitty decorated it, if Hello Kitty was a high society New York diva w/ an obsession for the color pink. If that sounds bad, it's not, it's really nice inside; quaint and small, but a little on the girl side. No, a lot on the girly side. Going up 47th, the place was hard to spot. But going down towards the plaza, there's a sign on the side of the next building over. The sign also has an arrow pointing to the right, which I think means you can park in the back. I didn't see that until leaving though, and luckily found a street spot in front. I told the owner (well, co-owner) that she was getting good reviews on Yelp and that's how I found her place. She said she's so busy she has no time to check online, but that she knew *what* Yelp is now, because somebody had come in earlier and told her that they Yelped her, and she was like, "you what?" Haha! Will. Be. Back. Yum! Public Service Announcement: Ack, their website has been designed for Internet Explorer only. Don't you hate that? This isn't 1994 any more. Design your website to work in standards-compliant browsers, meaning pretty much anything but IE. So at the moment, if the website looks wonky, view it on IE, at least until it's fixed.

I'm going to bring this cupcake party down just a little bit. Not a whole lot, just a little. I think that this cupcake place is pretty awesome. BUT, when I know what amazing things you can do with cupcake batter, I am a little disheartened to know that they only make vanilla and chocolate cupcakes. I realize that they want to do two things really well and then doll them up with various icings, but I want more. Especially since the owner of this establishment is obviously quite talented. But everyone should love this place, despite my greediness. The cupcakes are huge! Seriously, more like a giant cupcake muffin. The icings are good. I think I like their vanilla cake more than their chocolate cake, but that could just be a personal preference. I went with three other people who all got different kinds of cupcakes: the Lemon cupcake, the Espresso cupcake, and the Nutella cupcake. I got the pineapple/macadamia/white chocolate cupcake. Oh, god, it was really good. The vanilla cake is out of this world, and then to top it off with such a decadent icing is really kind of irresponsible. But, you know, I was feeling pretty outrageous this day so I shirked all notions of being a vegan and dived right in. My companions cupcakes were all good too. I especially liked the espresso cupcake, because I am sort of a coffee freak. I also like the edible decorations on all of the cupcakes. Espresso bean for the espresso cupcake, some sort of cookie for the nutella cupcake, and a lemon wafer for the lemon cupcake. How adorable. Also docking star for the lack of napkins readily available and silverware. It was maybe a little late in the day, but I think these things should be stocked. Although, when asked, they were more than quick to supply us with these necessary cupcake eating tools. But seriously, at 3 dollars, this is cheap cupcake eating. Especially for the sheer size of the cupcake. I mean, it is the size of a Bagel and Bagel (er... Einstein Bros) muffin. HUGE. And it's a quality cupcake. Moist and dense and delicious. I love them. I only wish that I indulged more often in the land of eggs and dairy.

I don't really crave cake or pastries in general but these cupcakes are amazing. I really don't know much about what goes into these but they did something right! My favorite is the Let it Snow cupcake with coconut. The staff is really friendly and let you be indecisive over their 20+ flavors. Highly recommended!

Best cupcakes in Kansas City. Great selection, nice and moist cake and tasty icings.

These look great but they don't taste as good as they look. Bottom line they were alright but I won't be going back any time soon.

I am a true cupcake snob and bake gourmet cupcakes myself, so when I give it 5 stars you KNOW it is good!!!

I'm not sure who they're paying to write reviews, or perhaps people haven't had true gourmet cupcakes. These cupcakes are just ok. They don't taste truly home made. They are fluffy like mix from a box and they only have chocolate or vanilla cake. The "types" of cupcakes come from icing and topping combinations. Also, beware, if you go in in the evening, you'll probably have 3 kinds to choose from and they will be dry from sitting in the case all day. We went when the store had two more whole hours to be open and they had 4 flavors and they were all dry. I guess they don't really expect business at night. Might as well close, rather than sell us your old, dried out vanilla cupcakes.

I would not consider myself a cupcake junky. A sweet junky, yes. But I typically opt for ice cream when I need a fix. Now that I have tried Cupcake a la Mode, though, my habit could begin to cause some serious damage...specifically to my waistline! It is, put simply, simply delicious. These cupcakes are seriously simplified. The biggest crime brought upon so many of these small little cakes in other establishments is that they are pumped full and topped off with so much junk that you can't remember if you're eating homemade play doh or perhaps something that a five year old concocted in an easy-bake-oven. The most important part of the cupcake should be the CAKE. And here they know their cake is so good that they offer a Naked Cupcake...topless, XXX version. Yeah, it's that good. Deliciously, perfectly moist and dense and light and sweet, but not too sweet...just downright delectable. You get three choices on the cake - vanilla, chocolate or red velvet and when you bite in you won't be traumatized by a burst of pudding like crap in your mouth (seriously, that stuff should be retained for wisdom teeth extractions and the very old). Like I said...it's all about the cake. Of course you can get your cake topped with any number of delicious flavor combinations or frosting and candies including Raspberry Lemonade, Bella Nutella and Mama Mia (tiramisu). Oh, and these cupcakes aren't the size of your head...so you get all of the enjoyment without the guilt or stomach ache to follow!

I live in Texas and my aunt who lives in Kansas City told me she wanted cupcakes for her Birthday. After doing a search on the web I found the website & they let me order over the phone. I paid for a dozen cupcakes and my aunt will go in and pick out the flavors of her choice. When I called and told her I could hear the excitement in her voice. The girl that took my payment was completely sweet & made ordering a breeze. I will be using them very often for other birthdays & holidays! Thanks for making this Birthday present a BREEZE!

Trust me on this. My goal was to search out THE best cupcakes in KC, and I have found them here. The servers and even owner aren't always as excited as you might prefer, but hey, at least the atmosphere, and most importantly, the baked goods are divine. My favorites are the raspberry lemonade and of course--the Bella Nutella.

I would like to live here. It's cute exterior is eye-catching and inviting, the decor is sylish, and the cupcakes are AMAZING. New the 'hood, Cupcake A La Mode is a hidden gem just west of the Plaza on 47th Street...if nothing else, stand in the parking lot and take deep, delicious breaths. We had the Bella Nutella, Love Doctor and the Amaretto Sweet...all very delicious and artfully decorated. Our favorite was the Amaretto Sweet, but the Love Doctor got extra points for having a chocolate covered strawberry on top. My only gripe is that they have weird and (inconvenient hours). Check out their website, but definetly stop in. BTW they are $3 each, but their size and deliciousness is worth it.

I have 2 favorite cup cake places and this is one of them, even better now that they have a store in Leawood. I love the cupcakes here because of the basic concept here. You can choose either a chocolate or vanilla cupcake base with a fantastic assortment of cupcake toppings. Toppings like French Toast, PB & J, Nutella, and Smores just to name a few. There vanilla cupcake is like a like poundcake, which I love and the chocolate is light and fluffy and not overly sweet. Gotta give this place a try it is fantastic.

I came here craving something sweet after having some delicious BBQ for lunch. The shop is cute, the way you'd expect a cupcake shop to be. I ordered the amaretto cupcake and the Love Doctor (chocolate cake with strawberry icing). The amaretto cupcake was a bit disappointing. The white cake was moist and delicious, but the amaretto portion of the icing was overpowering, to the point that it tasted medicinal, so I scraped off the icing and added some of the strawberry icing from the Love Doctor cupcake to make it just right. The Love Doctor was tasty and satisfying. It had a lot of frosting, but that is typical for these gourmet cupcake places. I was impressed with the selection of flavors and wish that I had more time to give them a try. However, I wasn't blown away by my cupcakes, and if I had to guess, I would say that this is probably an above average shop when it comes to cupcake creativity/presentation with average tasting cupcakes.

I put in an order Monday (3/25/13) evening for 30 cupcakes at the Leawood location. I got an automated email response stating that I would be hearing back from someone within 24 hours. It's now Thursday (3/28/13) and I never heard from anyone, so I emailed back to that address stating I had never received a call in response to my total or the retrieval of my credit card information. I got an email back with my order stating they had received it and I needed to call or email back my credit card information. Then not two minutes later I get an email for someone else's order stating that they had sent that person's confirmation to the wrong email address. I am not that person so they apparently sent it to the wrong address again. I called the store and told the girl I never heard back from anyone, and she said they closed early Monday and I placed my order Monday evening. Okay, but today is now Thursday. Then she hung up on me! So I called back and asked if she hung up on me and she stated they have really bad service in their building. Shouldn't a business have a land line if they know they have service issues? Since they seemed completely unprofessional, I cancelled my order. The girl then stated that they had lost my order and inquired if I wanted to hear what happened...no, cancel. I can't speak for the taste of the cupcakes, but as far as communication goes, they are lacking and I won't recommend their services.

How could you have fallen so far, so fast? I received some b-day cupcakes from here recently and they seemed stale and dry, not to mention, cloyingly sweet. Love on the rocks.

I think Cupcake a la Mode trumps BabyCakes. There's a large variety and they are all mouthwateringly delicious and so cute. Even when you walk in, you can help but notice how adorable the place is. The counter girl is friendly and know the products she's selling! She can tell you about all the flavors and their reviews. I have received cupcakes from there on many occasions that include: PB&J, Key Lime, Bella Nutella, Amaretto Sweet, Let it Snow, Love Doctor, Hawaiian Honeymoon, and Stuffed French Toast. My favorite is PB&J, hands down! Now the flipside is that the "variety" I mentioned, is only representative of the icing, not the cake. Basically all the cupcakes are either vanilla or chocolate, whereas BabyCakes has red velvet, carrot, etc. I would be in bliss for a happy medium. Tidbit, they are closed Sundays, so if you go Saturdays near closing, they've been known to give you a 50% discount off all remaining cupcakes. The selection may be smaller, but it's a good deal. They close at 6pm. ;) Go, go, go!

Best cupcakes I've had, hands down. Best texture and taste of both cake and frosting. The only bummer is that as far as I could tell, the cake part is either just vanilla or chocolate and it's the frosting that has the specific flavor. There's no way the same cupcakes I had were the same as the ones from the bad reviews. The other cupcakes I've had in the metro area don't compare except maybe Bloom which is pretty good but Babycakes is awful. The only issue with A la Mode is the somewhat uninterested and bored staff and the cute but very impractical boxes that do not hold the cupcakes very securely, which I was sad to pay $3 per cupcake just to see my cupcakes topple over in the box just walking to the car.

I LOVE CUPCAKES! Apparently I'm not the only one. Bakeries that specialize in just cupcakes seem to be the latest and greatest fad, and I am lovin it! The store itself is very cute. There are a few tables with chairs to sit at. And it appeared as though there were quite a variety of hot drinks available. It seemed as though this store was more geared toward women because everything seemed quite frilly and pink. I'm not complaining about that, but any man who is not completely secure with his manhood may not feel comfortable going by himself and sitting there. I guess the best, and way over used word, to describe this place is "cute". My friend had found out about this place somehow and had brought cupcakes to work one day. I tried the stuffed french toast cupcake. It was really tasty. I love icing, but there just seemed to be too much. However, I will take part of the blame for that. I had to eat the cupcake as I was running to meet my attending, so I could not eat the cupcake as I normally would. Normally, I would unwrap the cupcake and put it on a plate so that I can get equal amounts of icing in all bites. However, eating a cupcake on the run forces a person to start taking bites off the top. That makes it impossible to get an acceptable icing to cake ratio in each and every bite. So, I'll have to try the stuffed french toast again, but eat it the proper way. I'm a huge fan of yellow cake, and the cake itself was good. To me, it seemed a bit more spongy than I usually like. But it was good, nonetheless. My same friend called me around 4:30 PM on a Saturday night and asked me if I wanted to go on a cupcake run. Of course I accepted the invite. So I jumped in the car and went to pick her up. When we got there, there were only 4 cupcakes left in the entire place. They were all vanilla creme de cocao. The worker said that they could make some chocolate obsession cupcakes for us if we wanted them. I kind of suspected that inventory may be running low at that time of day, especially since they are closed on Sundays and Mondays. I am not a huge chocolate fan, so I just settled for the vanilla creme de cocao. I took two, and my friend took the other two. I was not disappointed with the cupcakes, even though they were chocolate. This place makes very good buttercream icing. I would not be disappointed if I went back and all that was left was a vanilla creme de cocao cupcake. Again, I felt that the cake was a tad bit spongy for my liking, but I ate it, so it musn't have been too bad. Will I be back? Of course I will!!! There are so many more cupcakes that I need to try.

Absolutely AMAZING!! I am typically not the kind to write reviews....but these cupcakes are soooo delicious i had to share. The cupcakes are huge and well worth $3, they are very moist with a generous helping of icing (which I love!). Definitely recommend Cupcake A La Mode!!!

Giant, beautiful moist cupcakes await you at this charming shop west of Country Club Plaza. It's tucked in a residential area, and has a small parking lot in front. The decor is sweet, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the huge cupcakes were delicious. Moist cake and creamy frosting that isn't too heavy on a waxy taste, not too heavy on the sugar. Just perfect and worth the $3 per cupcake. Great variety. If back in the area, I'll visit again!

This is the new place in town, which is to be rivaled with KC's BabyCakes. Cupcake a La Mode is located on 47th Street, just west off the plaza. Just look for the free-standing pink building with the black trim. And the inside is just as charming with bistro tables and pink and black decor; if Betsey Johnson became a foodie, this is what her place would look like. Cupcake a La Mode has a simple menu, offering ten or so chocolate cupcakes and ten vanilla cupcakes. Each cupcake is like a piece of art, with a delicious twist. Imagine a 'Hawaiian Honeymoon' cupcake, or a 'PB&J'...are these for real?! Yes, and they are a delectable treat for every taste bud in your mouth. They are sweet, but not too sweet; rich, but not overdone; finally, her cake is the perfect ratio of moist and heavy. Which makes Cupcake a La Mode a go-to place for the "perfect ending" to any dinner or with a 'stuffed French toast' they are able to be a "perfect start" to any day too. Move over, BabyCakes, there is a new girl in town and she leaves my taste buds tickled pink.
